Maintaining three CVs by hand
Most freelancers end up with more than one version of their resume, because more than one kind of client asks for one. A backend version. A version that leads with consulting. A short one for a form that will not take two pages.
They start as copies of each other and then drift. You finish a project and update the one you happen to have open. Three months later the other two still end at your previous client, and you send one without checking because the deadline was yesterday.

What actually belongs in a freelance resume
A corporate CV is organised around employment: where you were, for how long, with what title. A client hiring you for one project does not care about any of that in the same way. They are asking one question, which is whether you have solved their problem before.
So the order changes. Lead with the work, not the timeline. Each project wants the problem the client had, what you actually did, and what happened afterwards — that last part being the one most freelancers leave out, because it feels like boasting. It is not; it is the only part that distinguishes you from someone who merely worked on something similar.
Gaps matter less here than they do in employment. Nobody is reconstructing your calendar. Two strong projects beat a complete list of every contract you have taken.
And keep it short enough to read in a minute. This document exists to get you a conversation, not to survive a committee.
Who this is not for
This builds a client-facing resume, not a corporate CV. If you are applying to salaried roles through an ATS, you want something else: a plain, keyword-dense document formatted for a parser rather than a person. The emphasis here is the opposite — problems solved and outcomes delivered, written for a client deciding whether to hire you for one project.
If you need a specific academic or regional format — a European-style CV with a photograph and date of birth, or a full publication list — this is not that either.
And if you have one client and no intention of taking another, a resume is not the thing to spend an evening on.
